چکیده

McClure, A.; Liu, X.-H.; Hines, E., and Ferner, M.C., 0000. Evaluation of error reduction techniques on a LIDAR-derived salt marsh digital elevation model. Journal of Coastal Research, 00(0), 000–000. Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 07490208. Accurate elevation information is a necessity for conservation and management of tidal salt marshes where elevation differences can be as little as 2 m and where sea-level rise is a critical threat. We applied an existing method to evaluate and improve the vertical accuracy of a 1-m LIDAR-derived digital elevation model (DEM) using a real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS dataset with a vertical accuracy of 60.02 m and local vegetation data within a tidal salt marsh. We generated correction factors for vegetation species within each major vegetation class and produced a modified DEM of the site. Comparison between the original and modified DEM showed that the mean error was reduced from 0.16 m to 0.004 m and the root mean squared error was reduced from 0.212 m to 0.098 m. These results demonstrate that it is possible to significantly reduce vertical error contained within a salt marsh DEM derived from a LIDAR dataset using highly accurate RTK GPS data combined with vegetation data collected on a per site basis. ADDITONAL INDEX WORDS: DEM, China Camp State Park, National Estuarine Research Reserve, coastal vegetation, sea-level rise.

Adjusting Lidar-Derived Digital Terrain Models in Coastal Marshes Based on Estimated Aboveground Biomass Density

Digital elevation models (DEMs) derived from airborne lidar are traditionally unreliable in coastal salt marshes due to the inability of the laser to penetrate the dense grasses and reach the underlying soil. To that end, we present a novel processing methodology that uses ASTER Band 2 (visible red), an interferometric SAR (IfSAR) digital surface model, and lidar-derived canopy height to classi...

Conditional Random Fields for Airborne Lidar Point Cloud Classification in Urban Area

Over the past decades, urban growth has been known as a worldwide phenomenon that includes widening process and expanding pattern. While the cities are changing rapidly, their quantitative analysis as well as decision making in urban planning can benefit from two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) digital models. The recent developments in imaging and non-imaging sensor technologies, s...

The Development of a Salt Marsh Migration Tool and Its Application in Long Island Sound

Given their location in the intertidal zone, coastal salt marshes will be one of the ecosystems first affected by sea level rise. As sea level rise increases, marshes will begin to migrate inland if surrounding topography and land use provide suitable habitat. The question remains whether or not this migration inland will provide enough new habitat to sustain current marsh area as the seaward e...

Accuracy Assessment of LiDAR-Derived Digital Elevation Models Based on Approximation Theory

The cumulative error at a point in a LiDAR-derived DEM consists of three components: propagated LiDAR-sensor error, propagated ground error, and interpolation error. To combine these error components so as to assess the vertical accuracy of a LiDAR-derived DEM, statistical methods based on the error propagation theory are often used. Due to the existence of systematic error, statistical methods...

Accuracy Assessment of Lidar-derived Digital Elevation Models

Despite the relatively high cost of airborne lidar-derived digital elevation models (DEMs), such products are usually presented without a satisfactory associated estimate of accuracy. For the most part, DEM accuracy estimates are typically provided by comparing lidar heights against a finite sample of check point coordinates from an independent source of higher accuracy, supposing a normal dist...
